Vulvar Epidermal Inclusion Cyst as a Long-term Complication of Female Genital Mutilation

We present a case report of a patient with epidermal inclusion cyst as a late complication of female genital mutilation (FGM). We describe the management of the patient, and a review of the literature. We report the clinical and pathological findings in a 37-year-old female patient from Nigeria, with a clitoral mass of 1 year duration. She declared to have an FGM since she was 5 years. The lesion was excised successfully with good cosmetic results. Histological examination revealed epidermal cyst with the presence of granular layer. An epidermal inclusion cyst can develop as a long-term consequence of FGM.

Scopo. Scopo del presente studio è evidenziare i vissuti e le complicanze psicologiche connessi alle Mutilazioni Genitali Femminili (MGF) in riferimento al vissuto corporeo. Metodi. Sono state reclutate 20 donne che hanno subito una MGF nel proprio Paese di origine, immigrate da più di 5 anni in Italia (età media 33±9). Dieci donne erano state sottoposte a MGF di I tipo (lieve) e dieci a MGF di III tipo (profondo). European healthcare systems are increasingly being challenged to respond to female genital mutilation (FGM). This study explores the FGM experiences of migrant women coming from FGM-practicing countries residing in a European host country. A qualitative phenomenological study was carried out and 23 participants were included. Data were collected through 18 face-to-face open-ended interviews and a focus group and were analysed using Giorgi’s four-step phenomenological approach.
